For family offices & impact teams

The teams got investment-grade. The instrument didn't.

Family-office philanthropy is professionalising fast. The talent moving into these seats is genuinely investment-grade. So here's the question the sector keeps circling but rarely asks outright: now that the teams are this good, what should the instrument become?

The shift is real, and it's fast

68%
of family offices managing philanthropy in-house are building real impact capability — due diligence, measurement, partner selection
27%
are pioneering integrated models to take on systemic challenges, not just write grants
Foundation + DAF
the standard pairing — one for long-term strategy, one for speed

That's the picture in UBS's Trends in Philanthropy 2026: philanthropy moving from siloed grant-making to integrated, portfolio-wide, evidence-based strategy — with governments actively courting family capital into blended, de-risked vehicles. The direction is right. The capability is here.

The gap the report leaves open

The teams have been upgraded. The structures haven't. Foundation for strategy, DAF for speed — both excellent, and both single-use: the dollar goes out, works once, and retires. We've upgraded the pilots and kept the same aircraft.

The endowment side of philanthropy already thinks in cycles — capital works, comes back, works again. The giving side never has. There's no structural reason it can't.

The next upgrade: giving that doesn't retire at the first grant

Deploy, recover, deploy again

Structure a gift as a recoverable grant — capital that returns as a project generates revenue — and the same dollar can fund two, three, four missions instead of one. Same generosity, multiple outcomes.

Built for Australia's gift rules

The hard part isn't the idea — it's the legal architecture and recycling mechanics that make it work inside DGR and ancillary-fund rules. That's the year of work behind this.

How recoverable grants work

If this is the problem you want on your desk

We're building this in the open — the legal structure, the recycling mechanics, the first proof-of-concept cycle. If you're one of the new impact hires inside a family office, you're exactly who we want pressure-testing it. Follow along, or reach out.

Follow the build

Notes on the architecture as we go — legal structure, recycling mechanics, what works and what doesn't. No spam.
